Common Sense, where art thou?!
I'm so tired of everyone being offended or wanting the rest of the world to care when they are stupid and make bad choices. Social media has been rampant with stupidity the past few weeks. Did you know some Halloween costumes are now "cultural offenses?" Since when is a little girl wanting to dress like Pocahontas or Jasmine (her favorite "princess") or a little boy wanting to be a cowboy or a fireman considered offensive?!?! I would be HONORED if some child wanted to dress like me! Obviously there are costumes out there that are offensive (don't dress up like Hitler or the Grand Wizard), but common sense, people- use it. Next - Newborn babies now have "rules of visitation." For real?! Do mothers now get a free pass on common sense? I would think that you would only be inviting people over to see your baby whom you felt were safe for your child to be around. Or was that just the common sense trend when Caroline was born? Honestly, if you invite your mom, best friend, or neighbor over to see your newborn, allow them to hold and love on your baby. Obviously if they left their OWN common sense at home and show up hacking and coughing on your kid, you have the right to protect your child. But really - rules of visitation? Ugh. And THEN- people want me to feel sorry for them when they got their 3-year old killed in a car wreck because she was in a car seat made for a 7-year-old. I'm sorry, but no. I feel bad for that sweet baby that she had idiots for parents, but not for them. What kind of moron puts a 3-year-old in a backless booster seat with an adult seatbelt? "I didn't know she should have been in a 5-point harness." ** crickets** What century is this?! Life is not rocket science people!!! Use your brain! The directions are ON THE BOX! Obviously we all have potential for tragic car wrecks, but at least know that you did everything in your power to protect your child appropriately for their age and weight. My next annoyance- everybody doesn't get the trophy!!!! I totally agree with making sure our children are taught to be kind and inclusive and caring. But we are not ALL good at all the same things. Some of us are athletic, some of us can sing, some of us are pretty, some of us are smart. And some of us aren't. When I was little and played softball, I was good. But I didn't make the all-star team because I wasn't THAT good. Of course, it hurt my feelings - I was 10. Did I get over it and learn that life isn't always fair? Sure did. And I learned that I had to focus on things that I WAS really good at. I had a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses in life. It's commonly referred to as "growing up." It's amazing how many people see learning a lesson these days as bad for their child's self esteem. They really think that constantly telling children how wonderful they are is going to help them as adults. News Flash: It's not. I just hope they figure it out before it's too late. And now, the final straw that led to my ranting- Transgender humans being allowed in locker rooms of the opposite sex. Yes, boys born with all the appropriate "equipment" who just decided they "identify as a girl" are legally being allowed to change clothes in the girl's locker room. What. The. Hell?!?! Just because I decide I'm a frog- that does not make me a frog! I can behave like a frog all I want to- hop around, ribbit, eat flies, sleep outside- but I will never BE A FROG! And they are so concerned with the "rights" of this kid, what about the rights of the rest of the female population in that school?! Where is their right to privacy? There is a male, with male parts, looking at them in their underwear or even less and has the potential "right" to expose himself to them as well. How awkward is that for a high school girl?! I would have been mortified if I had been in that situation in high school. And what happens when it's the other way around? A girl wants to change in the boys locker room because she "identifies as a boy?" How do you think THAT is going to play out?? And just you watch- some boy is going to fake being transgender just to get into the girl's locker room. How long do you think that story will take to hit the newsstands? All this is going to do is cause locker rooms to become individualized little rooms that cut out typical social interaction among peers/teammates in a locker room. I could go on all day, but I digress. I'm just baffled. I think my life was better when I lived in blissful ignorance away from social media. There's just so much information out there that exposes such stupidity, I can barely stand it. This country as a whole needs to return to the days of common sense in every aspect of life, and fast- or we are doomed.
