Surgery Update

Just wanted to update everyone on Caroline's surgery. She had tubes put in both of her ears on Wednesday in an effort to finally get rid of the ear infections she's been having. My parents and Robert's mom were here with us, which was a great relief for me. The thought of putting her to sleep completely unnerved me. We went in at 7:00 a.m. to the outpatient clinic in Mobile and they took us back pretty quickly. She had to put on a tiny hospital gown (too cute!) and got an ankle bracelet. They always do the babies first thing in the morning since they're not allowed to eat anything after midnight the night before. So when it was our turn, the nurses came out and talked to her for a few minutes, and they she went right with them, no fussing or crying. She took Flops and her blanket with her so she at least had some familiar items. The procedure only took about 20 minutes (which felt like a lifetime!) and the doctor said everything went great. He had to drain puss from both ears, and her left one was the worst. We finally got to see her again and she was NOT happy about coming out of anesthesia. No matter what I did, nothing calmed her down. She would drink some juice, then push it away, want her paci, then spit it out, want Mommy, want Daddy, want down, etc - very disoriented. That lasted for about 20 minutes. When we got in the car she finally quieted down for Baby Einstein- go figure. She took a nap with me for about 2 hours when we got home. Then she was able to drink a real bottle, which helped her mood tremendously. She was fine for the rest of the day minus a little upset tummy that made for some interesting diapers. We have to put drops in her ears for 3 days and then she's done. So hopefully this will eliminate our problems and help her sleep at night. She still woke up last night, but I think she's in a bit of a habit now. So we're working on it. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers for us. It's a pretty scary feeling to have no control over the fate of your child, but we ( I ) made it through just fine. Check out Shutterfly for a cute pic of her in the hospital gown!
